Property Type and Location
These two properties at the very successful Hill End Campsite are a typical Welsh stone cottage and a stone barn conversion. Set on the stunning Gower they have a wonderful and very exposed aspect by the sea.
Pre-existing System
Hill End Farmhouse and camping is set on the stunning Gower Peninsula and consists of a typical Welsh stone cottage and a stone barn conversion. The owners are very eco-friendly, and had already solar panels and a wood pellet boiler installed to provide heat and hot water to the two houses. However, the existing wood pellet boiler was outdated and less efficient than more modern models.
The solar panels had ceased to function and needed replacing. The clients were pleased to learn that newer systems would not only further reduce their carbon foot print, but also be more efficient. On top of this, both qualify for the governmental RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) scheme – the previous system hadn’t qualified.
Birds’ Hill Solution
Solar Thermal
As mentioned earlier, the existing solar panel system was of an old type that lent itself to overheating. Newer products have come on to the market which are more efficient and sophisticated. And, many qualify for the RHI scheme.
From a selection of options the clients decided on Navitron evacuated solar thermal tubes. Whilst these are not as neat looking as the alternate flat panels they are exceptionally energy efficient, collecting huge amounts of solar energy throughout the day and providing up to 60% of your yearly hot water requirements. They also reduce costs.
We had also previously installed the compact Domusa system at this property.
New Renewable Heating System Benefits
- This system versus oil has significantly reduced C02
- They receive 20 years RHI payments
- This system was compatible with the existing boiler
- RHI payments for a period of 20 years
- Increased efficiency
- Sophisticated controls and ease of use.
The problem – outdated technologies
The solar panels on the building were not efficient enough nor did they qualify for RHI payments.
Considerations
Limitations in space and compatibility with existing wood pellet system were two key factors.
The solution
Navitron evacuated solar thermal tubes are exceptionally efficient and also function well with the Domusa system.
Benefits – rapid return on investment through the RHI and a cleaner, easier, sustainable heating system
- This system was compatible with the existing boiler
- RHI payments for a period of 20 years
- Increased efficiency
- Sophisticated controls and ease of use.
