Iain and Paula, the homeowners in this case study, approached us seeking a more sustainable alternative to their LPG boiler and gas tank. After exploring options with a national company at The Grand Designs Live event, they ultimately chose Birds Hill for our local expertise and ability to integrate solar panels and a wood pellet boiler into a cohesive system.
Installed in January 2025, the system combines solar panels, an EV charger, and a wood pellet boiler. This setup significantly reduced the household’s reliance on grid electricity while providing cleaner, more efficient heating and hot water. As Iain and Paula put it, “The solar panels and battery are already providing most of our electricity. The EV charger provides a cleaner and cheaper alternative to diesel. The wood pellet boiler not only runs our heating and hot water but has also replaced a multifuel stove and therefore is much cleaner and efficient; with significantly less ash waste which goes in the compost bin for the garden.”
The unconventional design of the house required our heating engineers and electricians to think creatively, finding effective and aesthetic solutions. According to the homeowners, “The installation process was a challenge to the team as the house is not conventional, but the heating engineers and electricians found both effective and aesthetic solutions.”
One unique requirement stemmed from a two-day power cut in December 2024. This experience led the homeowners to request additional backup solutions, which our team incorporated seamlessly.
Since installation, they have noticed a significant decrease in their electricity usage from the grid. The cost of wood pellets has proven much lower than their previous LPG and log expenses, creating substantial savings. The ability to control the system remotely through digital apps adds a layer of convenience and efficiency.
This project is a prime example of the shift towards sustainable living, showcasing how renewable energy solutions can replace traditional fossil fuels. “This installation reflects the current need to transition away from fossil fuel heating towards more sustainable options. In terms of design both the solar panels and the wood pellet boiler are extremely well designed and are an asset to a contemporary home.” The homeowners also benefited from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant, which helped offset the cost of the wood pellet boiler.
