Property Type and Location
Tina and Brian’s house in Llanwrtyd Wells was difficult to heat due to an inefficient, aged and dirty log / coal fired solid fuel boiler. Without automation it was extra hard work to generate the little heat the system was able to deliver and they had a tough job keeping the fire going until the morning so they could wake up to a warm house.
Birds’ Hill Solution
Tina and Brian chose the Klover Smart 80, which fitted into the existing alcove and provided a hob. It can be programmed in advance to fire up and the heating is thermostatically controlled.
The system is more efficient, cleaner, user friendly and an attractive feature in their cosy snug. The traditional design forms a beautiful feature.
They qualified for an interest free loan to pay for the system. The loan is paid by the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme over 7 years, making this a ‘free heating system’ for them.
New Renewable Heating System Benefits
The system is more efficient, cleaner and far more user friendly.
By moving away from fossil fuels, Tina and Brian have significantly reduced their carbon footprint.
It forms an attractive feature in their home.
Up to 5kw of heat are delivered to the room by the boiler
They qualified for an interest free loan to pay for the system. The loan is paid by the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme over 7 years.
Installation
We removed the coal burner and fitted the Klover Smart 80 into the same alcove. The existing piping had to go as it was outdated and tarnished. Our installer Derek did a sterling job at replacing and reorganising it to make the best use of the available space. We were able to keep the radiators but upgraded them by adding new TRV Valves for better efficiency and also fitted a new hot water tank.
Running the System
The system is automated, allowing the owners to programme the time the heat and hot water come on.It is also cleaner and much easier to operate, saving them plenty of time and dirty, hard labour.
The wood pellets are delivered in 10kg bags by Forever Fuels on a pallet to their home once a quarter, and then stored in an outbuilding. The bags of pellets are far cleaner and easier to handle than the coal, substantially reducing the amounts of both work and the dirt.
Funding
By switching to renewable energy the owner qualified for an interest free loan from the Robert Owen Community Bank, to pay towards the system. The repayments come from regular payments from the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme over 7 years
