Property Type and Location
David and Jane were using a solid fuel (coal/wood) range and a log burner to heat their 1890’s gamekeeper’s cottage located in Dinefwr Park, Llandeilo. The property is a solid stone building with limited opportunity for increased insulation and a high temperature radiator circuit. The existing range provided heating, hot water, charming looks and a facility for cooking but it was becoming hard work to keep the burners going and created dust and ash in their home; the couple were looking for a more automated and cleaner heating solution.
They considered various options including LPG and Oil but wanted a more sustainable solution and realised that the UK Government’s Domestic RHI (Re-newable Heating Incentive) Scheme provided a financial incentive for owners considering renewable heating options. They were concerned that the wood pellet supply might be subject to a monopoly of local producers so they initially dismissed biomass boilers and investigated an Air or Ground Source Heat Pump.
Birds’ Hill Solution
A friend recommended Birds’ Hill and Nick came round to discuss renewable heating options and quote for a Heat Pump; however owing to the insulation levels and the existing radiator circuit, an Air or Ground source heat pump would become expensive to run and potentially not meet the heating requirement. Nick reassured them about the competitive prices of wood pellets available and offered alternate biomass solutions. David and Jane were impressed with the high efficiency, automation and cleanliness of the Klover wood pellet boiler range. They were particularly attracted to and ultimately chose the Klover Smart 120 cooker boiler model in ‘British Traditional’ red finish which combines all the features of their previous range with the addition of a visible fire and a much cleaner more automated system.
New Renewable Heating System Benefits
The stylish Klover Smart 120 fitted perfectly into the space of the existing range. The stove and oven segments allow the couple to cook in their favourite spot: Jane is particularly keen on slow cooking and Welsh cakes fresh from the hot plate are delicious!
Elegant and with the burning flame visible the Klover Smart 120 forms a warm and attractive centre point of their kitchen. The system is user friendly, highly efficient, clean and gives them a chance to reduce their carbon foot print drastically.
Installation
Before:
The Klover Smart 120 was a tight fit in the existing alcove but our team levelled the hearth and installed the boiler onto a slide kit to allow servicing by enabling the boiler to slide in and out of the alcove.
We re-lined the flue and installed a new mains pressure hot water cylinder which provides the added advantage of mains pressure hot water. The boiler is controlled by standard heating and hot water timer and thermostats. The installation was completed in 4 days.
To blend in with the style of the charming house interior the electric wiring is hidden in copper pipes.
Running the System
The system is easy to run, thanks to the user friendly interfaces and is convenient, due to its automated features. David and Jane like to get up to a warm house and go to bed with a warm house, which they can now achieve easily by pressing a few buttons on the controls or even program heating times from afar via the Internet.
Funding
- The system qualifies for the Domestic Renewable Heating Incentive (RHI) scheme.
- The entire initial investment will be recovered in full over the 7 years of quarterly payments from the RHI.
