Property Type and Location
These two properties at the very successful Hill End Campsite are a typical Welsh stone cottage and a stone barn conversion. Set on the stunning Gower they have a wonderful and very exposed aspect by the sea.
Pre-existing System
Historically Hill End Farmhouse and camping had an oil boiler, this was then changed a few years back to a wood pellet boiler, as this was prior to the RHIs this system did not qualify for the RHI and was inefficient. The two properties were served by the one boiler so they required a system that would be able to feed both properties. Our clients wanted to reduce their carbon footprint which this new boiler achieves be we have also installed it in such a way that it can be integrated with one of our solar thermal systems in the future, which will also feed into the RHI.
New Solution
We recommended the Domusa 43 KW pellet boiler which feeds into a thermal store that feeds both properties and at some point in the future one of our solar thermal systems will be incorporated.
We have also now installed a solar thermal system to complement the Domusa.
New Renewable Heating System Benefits
- This system versus oil has significantly reduced C02
- They receive 20 years RHI payments
- Relatively automated solution – weekly top up with pellets
- The ash tray only needs cleaning once a month
The problem:
The old system did not qualify for the RHI and had lots of inefficiencies and greater efficiencies have been made in the newer pellet boilers
Considerations:
Was there anything that would fit the awkward space?
Would it get the RHI? This query was because in the original system an underground heat pipe was in place and OffGen will look upon this unfavourably because of the potential heat loss. Our team managed to jump through all the necessary hoops to ensure that this part of the process was not a headache to the client and ensured we secured the full RHI for the heating system.
Recommended solution:
Domusa 43 KW pellet boiler feeding a thermal store to the two properties and because it was feeding two houses it qualified for the Non-Domestic RHI.
Installation process:
A buffer management system was introduced which has improved the efficiency of the system. The existing boiler room was small and awkward and after some research the Domusa was the best fit.
The result:
3 year pay back
Increased efficiency
20 years of RHI income
