Birds Hill successfully installed a complete renewable heating system at a beautifully renovated and extended stone-built barn located in Usk, Monmouthshire. The installation was part of a full property transformation, bringing the building up to modern standards and significantly increasing its footprint with three bathrooms and a blend of contemporary and traditional living spaces.
The Solution
The heating system installed consisted of:
• A 16kW air source heat pump (ASHP)
• A 300L pre-plumbed domestic hot water cylinder
• An underfloor heating circuit on the ground floor
• A radiator circuit on the first floor
This system was selected as the most suitable and sustainable solution to meet the heating and hot water demands of the property, while aligning with the homeowner’s desire to eliminate reliance on fossil fuels.
Installation Process
With all floors exposed during the renovation, Birds Hill’s engineers began by installing the first-floor radiator circuit. The underfloor heating loops were then laid on top of pre-installed insulation across the ground floor, connecting into two UFH manifolds. Once the pipework was in place, the domestic hot water cylinder and 16kW air source heat pump were installed and integrated into the system. All components were pressure tested and triple-checked. With screed pouring imminent, the ASHP’s screed drying mode will be used to speed up the drying process and ensure efficient system commissioning.
Sustainability & Energy Efficiency
This fully electric heating solution means the customer no longer needs to use oil to heat their home or water – cutting out fossil fuel use entirely. In addition to the environmental benefits, the system is expected to deliver cost savings of approximately 15–20% compared to traditional oil heating.
