Powerful Ecompact 190 utility wood pellet boiler in Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys

Property Type and Location

The property is a former farm in Llanwrtyd Wells in Powys with a traditional solid wall stone house and a barn conversion outbuilding. The Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Boiler wasn’t faulty but was expensive to run and the owner felt a change was needed.

Birds’ Hill Solution

For the size of the building and with the availability of the connected outbuilding the Ecompact 190 utility wood pellet boiler seemed the best option. The boiler has an output of 18.2kW to water and an efficiency of 92.3%.  The boiler comes with a 90kg hopper system to feed the boiler automatically, making pellet top ups a weekly rather than a daily task. In Powys advantageous loans for renewable heating systems are available from the Robert Owen Community fund and regular payments by the Domestic RHI are sufficient to pay the loan back.

New Renewable Heating System Benefits

System paid for* by the Domestic RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive)
A loan from the Robert Owen Community Fund covered the cost of the system.
Low carbon heating and hot water through sustainable and legal fuel source

Centrally controlled and automated heating and hot water

Installation

The boiler was to be located in the old outhouse with plenty of room for the hopper. The installation was easy since the connections for the plumbing are situated on top of the boiler making it easier to install to the existing radiator system.

Running the System

The system is programmable and automated. Since the 90kg hopper needs to be topped up only once a week it is easy to run.

Funding

By switching to a renewable heating source a loan from the Robert Owen Community Fund became available which covered the cost of the system. Quarterly payments from the Domestic RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) help paying for the system.
